Christmas Breakfast Casserole

Make Christmas morning extra cozy with this warm and satisfying breakfast casserole. Savory sausage, tender bread, fluffy eggs, and plenty of melted cheese come together in a comforting dish you can prepare the night before and simply bake while everyone enjoys the holiday morning.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 pounds regular breakfast sausage cooked and drained
  • 9 slices rustic bread cut into cubes
  • 8 ounces Swiss cheese shredded
  • 8 ounces cheddar cheese shredded
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons dried minced onion
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • nonstick cooking spray for the baking dish

Method
 

Preparation — The Night Before:
  1. Coat a 9 × 13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, dried minced onion, mustard powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Add the cubed bread, cooked sausage, Swiss cheese, and cheddar cheese. Stir gently until everything is evenly combined.
  4. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
Baking the Casserole:
  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F.
  2. Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 15–20 minutes. Remove and discard the plastic wrap.
  3. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 20–25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 10–15 minutes, until the center is set and the top is golden brown.
  4. Let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For a festive finishing touch, garnish the casserole with chopped fresh parsley or chives just before serving.
